Increase in the country’s sugar production, production has crossed 12 million tonnes so far

In the October-December quarter of the current marketing season, the country’s sugar production has increased by 3.69 percent to 120.7 lakh tonnes. Industry body ISMA has given this information. Sugar production in India, one of the major sugar producing countries in the world, was 116.4 lakh tonnes in the same period of last marketing year. The sugar marketing year runs from October to September. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), about 509 mills were crushing as against 500 mills earlier in the said period.

ISMA said in a statement that during the October-December period of marketing year 2022-23, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh has reached the level of 3.09 million tonnes a year ago, while it has increased marginally to 4.68 million tonnes in Maharashtra. , while there was a production of 4.58 million tonnes by this time a year ago. Sugar production in Karnataka increased marginally to 26.7 lakh tonnes as compared to 26.1 lakh tonnes earlier. ISMA said that during October-December of the current marketing year, sugar production has reached 3.8 lakh tonnes in Gujarat, 2.6 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu and 9.9 lakh tonnes in other states.

ISMA has estimated sugar production at 365 lakh tonnes in marketing year 2022-23, which shows an increase of two per cent as compared to 358 lakh tonnes in marketing year 2021-22. After the arrival of sugar production figures, now the government may consider increasing the sugar export quota for the current marketing year 2022-23 after assessing the domestic production in January. India exported a record 111 lakh tonnes of sugar in the marketing year 2021-22.
