Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Central Jail on April 1. For his good conduct, the prison department will release him prematurely. Sidhu has been in jail since May 20 last year after he was convicted by the Supreme Court in a road rage case. For his good conduct, Sidhu will get 45 days of remission from the one-year sentence awarded by the apex court. His scheduled release from jail was on 16 May. A jail official said, “As per Punjab jail rules, a convict in jail gets 5 days’ remission every month for his good conduct. Sidhu is thus entitled to 45 days’ remission, which paves the way for his early release.” He does. Thus he will be eligible for release on 1st April.”
The prison officer said that it is the duty of every jail to deduct five days from the sentence every month for the good conduct of the prisoner, unless he is convicted of a heinous crime. The jail authorities are bound to follow the Punjab Jail Rules, and there is no authority which can deny such relief to a convict of good behaviour.
Neither took parole nor a single leave during the sentence
On May 19, 2022, the Supreme Court sentenced Sidhu to one year’s imprisonment. On May 20, Sidhu surrendered in the Patiala court. Sidhu is completing one year on May 19, 2023. The concerned jail superintendent also has the right to waive the sentence. He can give a concession of one month in punishment to a prisoner with good conduct. Sidhu neither took any parole nor any leave in one year. They can get the benefit of 40 days concession as per rules. Due to this Sidhu’s release may happen around 9th April.

The Punjab government is preparing a list of prisoners to be released on Baisakhi festival, in which the names of most of the prisoners included in the list proposed to be released on January 26 are included. Sidhu is working as a clerk in Patiala Jail and during this period his conduct has also been good.
