What is the reason for the increase in the number of tigers in the state?

Weeding is the main reason for the increase in the number of tigers in the states..! Yes, this issue has been confirmed by the forest department officials. In 2018, Karnataka had fallen to the 2nd position in the country in the number of tigers. The state of Madhya Pradesh emerged as the state with the highest number of tigers in the country.

After this development, the alert forest department took necessary steps to increase the number of tigers in the state. Karnataka had taken all necessary steps to climb back to the number one position in the number of tigers. Among these, forest management was also very important. Necessary measures were taken to increase the grassland by removing many types of weeds including lantana.

For this, the forest department staff had to work hard. Rajeev Ranjan, an officer of the Forest Department, who gave information about this, explained the efforts put in by the staff to remove many types of weed plants including lantana. Grassland increased after weeding the forest. This led to an increase in the number of herbivorous wildlife. The tigers did not face any problem of food. Thus, the number of tigers increased day by day.

Taking Karnataka’s decline to the second position after the tiger census figures came out in 2018, the forest department gave first priority to the management of national parks. The patrolling team of the forest department was quick. It gave priority to the development of wildlife in all national parks of the state. Although the fact that Karnataka has risen to the first position has not been revealed yet, our hard work has paid off, says Ranjan.

After the eradication of weeds in the forest, there was an increase in the number of herbivorous and carnivorous animals in the forest. Workers also carried out weed eradication work in the forest under the Narega scheme. In particular, the workers uprooted many weeds including lantana in the tiger sanctuaries of Nagarhole, Biligiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple. After this grassland was created. As the grassland increases, the number of herbivores increases. Along with this, the number of carnivorous animals that eat herbivores also increased naturally, Ranjan informed.

According to sources, weeds have been eradicated in a total area of 80 hectares in Nagarahole Sanctuary. Weed control has been carried out for the last two to three years in the Antarsanthe zone. 600 hectare area in Bandipur has been weeded. Out of the total forest area of Bandipur, 35 to 40 areas were covered by weeds. At present, the forest department has seen a lot of success in eliminating these.
