New Delhi
A few years from now, the metro train in Delhi may be seen running with your car. You may find this a joke at first, but it can turn into reality in Phase 4 of Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is considering the capital’s first metrolite corridor. Under this, there is a plan to run trains between Rithala and Narela with conventional coaches instead of small articulated coaches.

Train will run on 22 km long route
The Metrolite corridor is a part of the Phase IV project of the Delhi Metro. Under this service, there is a plan to run the train on a route of about 22 km in the middle of the road. In this, the metro train will run in the middle of the road between facing from both the sides. However, no design has been finalized yet. DMRC plans to run small trains on the lines of other light train projects across the world. This is because the number of passengers on the route is not expected to be high.

Only existing metro coaches will be used
DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh told TOI that although we are clear about the alignment, the option is open on what kind of train it will be. Singh said that the sharp curves, steep gradients used for the light rail project will be taken care of. That is why such trains have small coaches. He said that instead of 10-11 meter coach of Light Train Project, only 22 meter long coach of Delhi Metro can be used.

Metrolite system will be cheaper in terms of cost
Mangu Singh explained that three coaches together make up a train unit. The technology for the Light Rail Project is different so that smaller and clearer coaches can be operated on sharp curves. However, that technology is really expensive. He said Delhi’s Metrolite could be a cheaper system as the corridor is not likely to have sharp curves, but it is a fairly straight alignment. Singh said that finally, keeping in mind the techno-economic considerations, we realized that traditional metro coaches may be suitable for this. He said it is possible that DMRC may choose that option.

There will be platforms with small sheds in the middle of the road
Singh said that though the company can use the existing Metro coaches, the entire concept will be Metrolite. These include platforms with sheds in the middle of the road instead of large stations, ticket validators inside trains instead of automatic fare collection. This is the reason why the cost of light rail systems is less than half that of high-capacity systems like metro networks. However, Singh said the train selection is not final and DMRC will choose the most economical option.

Passengers reach the platform via subway
For Metrolite, passengers will be able to access the platform via a subway that opens in the middle of the road and in the middle of the road. Singh said that most of the Metrolite on the Rithala-Narela road would be on the ground. Whereas, the proposed second metrolight between Kirti Nagar and Dwarka Exhibition-cum-Convention Center may have an elevated section where required.
