Former Punjab minister urges Modi to repeal agricultural laws

Chandigarh, Oct 24 (PTI) Former Punjab minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the controversial agriculture laws so that farmers can return to their homes before the bitter cold.

He emphasized that hundreds of farmers have been killed during the agitation against agricultural laws. Farmers have been camping at the borders of Delhi since November 26 last year to demand the repeal of the three new agricultural laws. Most of them are farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress MLA said, “The country has been witnessing farmers’ protest for more than a year. While on one hand we have seen farmers standing united to take their voices to those in power, hundreds of farmers are also like this. Those who have lost their lives fighting for their rights.”

Sodhi said that it is unfortunate that the protesting farmers are living in adverse conditions without proper availability of necessary material, sanitation and clean drinking water.

The Congress leader said in a statement, “His persistence in spite of his continued trouble shows his strong resolve that he will not go until a rational decision to repeal the controversial agricultural laws is agreed upon.”

Sodhi urged the Prime Minister to resume talks with farmers and withdraw the laws so that farmers can return to their homes before the onset of the harsh winter.

Sodhi said the decision to withdraw all three agriculture laws would not in any way reflect the “weakness” of the central government as argued by some sections of the society, but would rather show the Center as “big-hearted and liberal”. .

“I sincerely request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to kindly reconsider the decision in favor and interest of our farmers,” he said.
