Kerala University Maternity Leave: State Government owned Kerala University has made a big announcement for its students. Now girl students above 18 years of age studying in the university can take maternity leave for six months. The University of Kerala issued an order in this regard on Monday (6 March). Higher education institutions in the state have already changed the attendance of girl students from 75 to 73 percent in terms of periods leave.
According to the decision of the University Syndicate, any girl student who goes on maternity leave can resume her class after 6 months without getting admission again. The duration of the course will also be increased for the candidates after coming from maternity leave, so that their studies are not affected.
The university management said it will be the responsibility of the college principal to verify the medical records of the candidates and allow them to rejoin the college without university approval.
Decision taken on Periods Leave
In January, the Higher Education Department had issued an order to give periods leave to the students of all higher education institutions in Kerala. Girl students can now appear in their semester exams with 73 per cent attendance as against the mandatory 75 per cent attendance so far under university rules. Cochin University of Science and Technology was the first university to announce an unprecedented gender-sensitive reform in the higher education sector.
SC remarks on period leave for women
In India, there is a demand to give periods leave to working women as well. However, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition related to this in the past. The court has said that this is a policy issue. For this, a memorandum should be given to the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The court also said, "There can also be apprehension that if the employer is forced to take such leave, he may refrain from employing women."
