Are chickens birds or animals? Chicken shop closed amid new debate in Gujarat, understand the whole matter

Ahmedabad: What came first the chicken or the egg? This question has been going on like an unsolved puzzle for a long time. But the new puzzle is whether the rooster is an animal? On this question, a public interest litigation was heard in the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday. In the petition, instead of slaughterhouses, objection has been raised on killing chickens of poultry form at chicken shops. Now the poultry traders and chicken shop owners are hoping that the High Court will hear their petitions and allow them to reopen their shops soon.

Corporations took action
Gujarat High Court The Gujarat High Court, hearing the petitions of Animal Welfare Foundation and Ahimsa Mahasangh, had recently banned the slaughter of chickens in shops. The court had said that cleanliness should be taken care of. Following the decision of the High Court, the Municipal Corporations in big cities of Gujarat had taken action and closed a large number of meat shops. Maximum number of shops were set up in Surat Municipal Corporation area.

Poultry traders and chicken shop owners have now moved the High Court against this decision of the court. During the first hearing, the question arose whether chickens are birds or animals. After this a new debate broke out. The petitioners demand that the slaughtering of poultry birds should be done in slaughterhouses while the poultry traders and chicken shop owners argue that this demand is not practical. Their argument is that slaughterhouses are meant for slaughtering animals. In such a situation, poultry birds should be brought under its ambit. Poultry traders and chicken shop owners remained worried during the court hearing. They say that their livelihood is being affected by the court’s decision.

There is a demand for permission to open shops
Poultry traders and chicken shop owners have demanded opening of shops, terming as impractical the argument of getting the cutting of poultry birds done in the slaughter house. The Supreme Court had said in its order that the slaughter houses should be operated according to the rules. Now it is interesting that what decision the Gujarat High Court gives in the coming days. The hopes of the meat shop owners rest on this. If they do not get permission to slaughter chickens at the meat shop, then they will have to turn to the slaughter house again.
