UN condemns attacks on schools, teachers and children

United Nations, Oct 30 (AP) The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the attacks on schools, teachers and children and called on all parties to promote the right to education.

A resolution adopted by the council by a vote of 15-0 on Friday emphasized the “invaluable role” of education in providing a “life-saving environment”. It states that education contributes to achieving peace and security.

“For the first time, the Security Council has adopted a resolution specifically dedicated to the protection of education,” Norway’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mona Jul, who sponsored the resolution with Niger, told the council after the vote.

He told the council, “There are attacks on education all over the world. Between 2014 and 2019, 11,000 attacks harmed more than 22,000 students and teachers in at least 93 countries.

The resolution urges the 193 UN member states to “take effective measures to prevent attacks and threats against schools and educational institutions”.

The Council expressed “deep concern that girls and women may be subjected to attacks for their contribution to education.” Such attacks can include rape, sexual violence and sexual slavery.” The council members urged the members of the United Nations to “take steps for girls’ right to education”.
