Accused of selling hemp on Amazon, case against senior officers of the company

E-commerce platform Amazon has been accused of selling hemp. In this case, the police have registered a case against senior officials of Amazon’s local unit under the Narcotics Act. On November 14, Madhya Pradesh police arrested two people with 20 kg of ganja. In their investigation, the police found that the accused were smuggling ganja under the guise of a natural sweetener to supply it to other states, for which the website of Amazon India was being used.

In a statement, the Madhya Pradesh Police said that the executive directors of Amazon India are being named as accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, as available from the company in response to questions asked by the police. There is a difference between the documents made and the facts revealed in the discussion. Police, however, did not disclose how many officers were charged.

In this case, the police called and talked to the Amazon officials. Police estimate that around one thousand kilos of ganja, which is worth around $148,000 (about Rs 1.1 crore), was sold through Amazon.
At the same time, Amazon has also issued a statement in its defense, saying that the company does not legally allow the listing and sale of banned products and takes strict action against its sellers if there is a violation. Regarding this alleged smuggling through the website, the company also says that it is investigating the allegations.

It is worth noting that Indian authorities have intensified their efforts against drug trafficking in the last few years. Several high-profile actors, children of celebrities and TV personalities are under the scanner of the authorities in drug dealing cases. This series has gained momentum after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. In the past, Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan was also accused of such allegations and he had to spend several days in jail.
