Shreyas Iyer would have made his debut four years ago, a decision by Rahane had broken the dream

Kanpur
Shreyas Iyer played his last first-class match for Rest of India against Vidarbha in 2019. Now after a long gap, he has got a chance to make his Test debut. Although he would have made his Test debut four years ago, a decision by Rahane made his wait longer.

The one who got the wait, now the chance under his captaincy
26-year-old Shreyas Iyer wore Team India’s jersey in 2017. Then made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in December. But if all was well, he would probably have worn the Test cap before the ODIs. Actually, in 2017 the Australian team was on a tour of India. The fourth match of the series was to be played in Dharamsala. Shreyas Iyer was supposed to replace the injured skipper Kohli, but stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane thought it appropriate to go with an extra bowler. When the opportunity got out of hand, it turned out that now after four years, he got a place in the Test team.

303rd player to debut for India
Interestingly, a player made his debut against New Zealand after 18 years. Earlier in the year 2003, Yuvraj Singh got this good fortune and now in 2021 Shreyas Iyer’s number has come. Till a few months back, he was admitted in the hospital with an injured shoulder. Could not play till the initial season of IPL 2021, but getting the Indian Test cap from there was not so easy for this Mumbai batsman.

Tremendous record in first class cricket
The doors of Team India open with domestic cricket. Cricket is in the air in Mumbai. Shreyas also came out of this furnace and became Kundan. Till 2019, in five seasons, 4592 runs had come off his bat at an average of 52.18. The strike rate also stood at 81.54. Shreyas Iyer did make a comeback later in the second leg of IPL 2021 in UAE, but he was not made the captain. The team kept its faith in Rishabh Pant, who replaced him after a shoulder injury. After the IPL, there was a return to the Indian T20 team, but the T20 World Cup was limited to only reserve players in the squad.

Iyer’s debut is part of Dravid’s plan
Rahul Dravid is a visionary person. After becoming the coach, he has made it clear many times that his target is the World Test Championship. In such a situation, the arrival of young players like Shreyas Iyer in the team is a sign of that change. Iyer is a strong middle order player. Since 2019, he is a strong contender for number four in ODIs and T20s. Anyway, it has become necessary to find alternatives of players like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are part of Guru Dravid’s core plan.
