Mumbai: Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will be the new Governor of Maharashtra. Captain Amarinder Singh, who was the Chief Minister in the Congress government of Punjab, parted ways with the Congress shortly before the Punjab Assembly elections. After this he joined BJP. At the same time, the announcement of making Captain Amarinder Singh the Governor of Maharashtra is becoming a big gift for him. In fact, the present Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari had expressed his desire to step down from the post in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After this, it has been decided to make Amarinder Singh the governor.

Koshyari was constantly on the target of the opposition due to his remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji. Due to this, he had prepared to step down from the post. Bhagat Singh Koshyari had said on Monday that during the recent visit of the Honorable Prime Minister to Mumbai, I had told about my desire to be free from all political obligations and to spend the rest of my life in reading, writing and other activities. He said that he would like to spend the rest of his life in other activities including reading and writing.

According to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor had said that he had always received love and affection from the Honorable Prime Minister and hoped that he would receive the same affection in this regard as well. The Prime Minister was in Mumbai on January 19 to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate several projects. Koshyari said that it is a matter of complete honor and privilege for me to serve a great state like Maharashtra, the land of saints, social reformers and brave fighters, as a state servant or governor.

Koshyari had assumed office as the Governor of Maharashtra in September 2019 when the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government was in power. Koshyari had disputes with the government on several issues, including the appointment of 12 members to the state Legislative Council. The MVA accused him of acting in a discriminatory manner. The recent controversy was over Koshyari’s statement in which he commented on Chhatrapati Shivaji, calling him an “old-age idol”.

In another controversial statement, the governor had said that Mumbai would cease to be the financial capital of the country if people from the Rajasthani and Gujarati communities decided to leave. Koshyari administered the oath of office to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister after the Shiv Sena broke the alliance with the BJP after the 2019 assembly elections. In another controversial statement, he had described Samarth Ramdas as the guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
