The new CDS of the country, Anil Chauhan, took charge, said – we will solve the challenges together

General Anil Chauhan took over as the second Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of India on Friday. They are aimed at coordination between the three wings of the armed forces and the creation of an ambitious ‘theatre’ command, to prepare the country’s forces to meet the security challenges of the future.

General Chauhan has been the head of the Eastern Command of the Army. More than nine months after the death of India’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat, in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, General Chauhan has assumed the responsibility of the senior-most military commander. General Chauhan said, ‘I will try to live up to the expectations of the three wings of the army.’

CDS General Anil Chauhan said, ‘I am proud that today I am going to take charge as the Chief of Indian Army. Government of India, I will try to fulfill the hopes of the three services. Whatever security challenges and difficulties we face, we will try to overcome them jointly.

General Chauhan is considered an expert on Chinese affairs

General Chauhan is considered an expert on China affairs. His appointment to the top post comes at a time when there is a border dispute between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. A highly experienced and ornate officer of the Indian Army, 61-year-old Lt Gen Chouhan will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, Ministry of Defence.

He had retired on May 31 last year from the post of Chief of Eastern Command. After this he was working as a military adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat under National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Before assuming the charge of CDS, General Chouhan paid tributes to the martyred soldiers at the National War Memorial at India Gate. He was given a guard of honor by the three armed forces on the lawns of South Block in Raisina Hills.

Was commissioned in 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981

General Chauhan was born on 18 May 1961 and was commissioned in the 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981. General Chauhan was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Army during the Balakot attack in 2019. In response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama, Indian fighter jets carried out air strikes on Pakistan’s Balakot and destroyed training centers of Jaish-e-Mohammed.

General Chauhan has held the ‘Four-Star Rank’ after taking over as the second CDS of the country. He has become the first retired officer to return to service with a four-star rank after retirement.
