On this day in 1978, an Air India plane with 213 passengers sank into the sea. The Boeing 747 aircraft named Samrat Ashok crashed moments after take off from Mumbai International Airport due to mechanical failure. There were 190 passengers and 23 crew members on board. Immediately after the incident, it was suspected that it was part of a conspiracy. But an examination of the wreckage found in the sea proved it to be an accident. 1664 :  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj entered Surat to plunder Surat.

Mughal Sardar Shahistekhan was encamped in Maharashtra for three consecutive years. Meanwhile, the revenue of the Maratha Empire decreased and the financial condition of the state became fragile. After expelling him from Pune, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj planned to plunder the city of Surat in Gujarat to improve the financial situation of the state. Shivaji Maharaj appointed his chief spy Bahirji Naik to monitor the financial and military movements around Surat. Bahirji met Shivaji Maharaj after taking out Bittambatami of Surat and said that if he attacked Surat, he would get a huge treasure. After consulting on this, Maharaj planned to march to Surat. For that, Shivaji Maharaj entered Surat on January 1, 1664. After that, on 5 January 1664, Shivaji Maharaj succeeded in his campaign by storming Surat with his cavalry.

1862 : Indian Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure enacted 

On this day i.e. 1 January 1862, the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code were enacted. Earlier it was approved on 6 October 1860. The Indian Penal Code popularly known as the IPC is the primary criminal law of India, which takes into account every material aspect of criminal law. The Act has been amended several times since 1862. It defines all possible crimes in the country and their associated punishments.

1818 : Battle of Bhima Koregan (Bhima Koregan)    

Battle of Bhima Koregaon was fought on 1 January 1818. A battle was fought between Bajirao Peshwa (2nd) and the 2nd Bombay Native Infantry Battalion. In this battle the British were victorious and the Marathas were defeated. Indian soldiers of all castes and religions were fighting in the British army.  However, the number of Mahar soldiers was large. The importance of this battle is the power of the British Maharashtra, the British erected a victory column on the banks of the Bhima river in memory of the soldiers who were martyred in this battle. Names of soldiers from all castes and religions can be seen on this pillar, in which the proportion of Mahar soldiers is large. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar visited this Victory Pillar on 1st January 1927. The purpose of Dr. Ambedkar’s visit was to create awareness in the Mahar community through this feat and to start a new Mahar regiment in the British army. After that the Ambedkari community started celebrating Victory Day at Koregaon Bhima on January 1 every year. 

1848 : Mahatma Jotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule built Bhide Wada Pune started the first girls’ school (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule And Savitribai Phule) 

 Mahatma Jotiba Phule visited a girls’ school run by Christian missionaries in Ahmednagar. Then he started the first girls’ school in Bhide’s palace in Pune on 1st January 1848.  The responsibility of the teacher there was entrusted to Savitri Bai. Since then Savitrabai Phule is named as the first woman teacher in India.

1932 : Start of Sakal newspaper (Sakal paper)
