Disturbances in records of water being released into Sabarmati river worrying: Court

Ahmedabad, Oct 27 (PTI) The Gujarat High Court has said that it is “very disturbing” that the sewage treatment units (STPs) set up here to clean the polluted water before it is discharged into the Sabarmati river. Laboratories indulge in malpractices of records. The court asked the local civic body to look into the issue.

During the hearing of a suo motu PIL, such irregularities were exposed in the report submitted by a committee constituted by the court to probe pollution in the river.

A division bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Vaibhavi Nanavati, in an order, directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to ensure scientific operation of all STPs and to find out the ways of on-site treatment of sewage drains in the Sabarmati river. The court gave this direction in an online order issued on Wednesday.

The bench, in its order dated October 21, said, “It is very disturbing that the laboratories of STPs run and managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation were found to be involved in discrepancies in the records.”

The court is hearing a suo motu PIL which is based on media reports that polluted water is being discharged into the Sabarmati river without treatment as per prescribed norms.
