A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court. The petition sought instructions to pursue a 3-year law degree course after school (12th). At present, the duration of LLB course, which students can join after 12th, is 5 years. The petition filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay said that the duration of 5 years for LLB course is unreasonable and illogical. The petition filed by the advocate asked the Center and the Bar Council of India to ascertain the feasibility of starting 3-year Bachelor of Law courses like Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) after class 12th. A demand was made to direct the formation of an expert committee.
The petitioner says that students can easily study 15-20 subjects in 03 years i.e. 06 semesters. Therefore the present duration of 05 years i.e. 10 semesters for Bachelor of Law course is inappropriate. Therefore it violates Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.
In his petition, the advocate considered the time limit of 5 years for law degree unfair for four reasons.
primary reason
There is no required length of time for the award of a bachelor's degree.
second reason
Long period of 05 years is not suitable for the student.
third reason
05 These precious years are not proportionate to the study of law.
fourth reason
This will place a tremendous financial burden on students to complete such a lengthy degree.
