19,000 backward caste students left higher education in last 5 years: Center

According to the Ministry of Education, during 2018-2023, there are more than 19,000 students belonging to OBC, SC and ST categories who have dropped out of Central Universities, IITs and IIMs. This figure was given by Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar in response to a written question in the Rajya Sabha.
According to the records, from 2018 to 2023, 19255 students have left studies in various courses of various Central Universities, Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management. In the mentioned time period, 14446 students have dropped out in three categories, 44444 students have dropped out from IITs and 336 from IIMs.

Sarkar said that students have many options in the higher education sector and they choose to shift from one course or program to another in the same institution.

This migration happens because of their choice in some other department or institute or because of securing a seat for some other reason. Government has taken various steps like fee reduction, establishment of more institutes, scholarship, giving priority to national level scholarship to help the students from poor economic condition to pursue their education.
