Delhi has received 1,502.8 mm of rain so far this year, which is a new record for the national capital in a year. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital received 1,420.3 mm of rainfall in 1933, the highest in a year during the period 1901-2021.
This is the fourth time in 121 years in the national capital after 1933, 1964 and 1975 that Delhi has received more than 1,200 mm of rainfall. The Safdarjung Observatory, which is known to provide official meteorological data for Delhi, recorded 1,502.8 mm of rain till Monday evening.
This is the second highest rainfall in the capital since 1901, when the IMD started collecting data, an official said. Delhi had recorded 773.2 mm of rain last year. Mahesh Palawat, vice-president of private forecasting agency Skymet Weather, said it was just a matter of intense western disturbance.
It is highly likely that Delhi will witness a new record of annual rainfall this year. Generally, three to four Western Disturbances are recorded every month during the winter season, causing snowfall in the mountainous region and rain in the northern plains.
Generally, Delhi receives 653.6 mm of rain during the monsoon season. Last year, the capital had recorded 576.5 mm of rainfall. Delhi had recorded 1,155.6 mm of rainfall in 1975, 1,190.9 mm in 1964, while the record so far recorded in 1933 was 1,420.3 mm.
