He was born in Rampur Baghel village of Vaishali district. He obtained his graduation degree in Sociology from Banaras Hindu University in 1964. He also completed his master’s degree in 1980 and PhD in 1985 from Patna University. He founded the Sulabh International Social Service in 1970 with the aim of solving the country’s sanitation problems.
