HP and Google come together for manufacturing Chromebook, Indians will now get cheap laptops

Chromebook: PC maker HP has joined hands with Google to manufacture Chromebooks in India from October 2. The company gave this information on Thursday. According to a statement issued by HP, Chromebook devices will be manufactured at the Flex facility near Chennai. HP has been producing a range of laptops and desktops there since August 2020.

Vikram Bedi, senior director (personal systems), HP India, said, ‘‘ Manufacturing of Chromebook laptops in India will provide easy access to affordable PCs for Indian students. By further expanding our manufacturing operations, we will support the government’s ‘Make in India’ Will continue to support the initiative.’’ Google’s Head of Education (South Asia) Bani Dhawan said, ‘‘ The local production of Chromebooks with HP is in line with our efforts to continue supporting the digital transformation of education in India.’’

India is focusing on digital education and many government Schools are investing in computing hardware, including laptops, desktops and tablets. The Make in India plan for Chromebooks (which are in the Rs 20,000-30,000 price range) is also likely to help HP secure orders from government schools. Along with this, HP also intends to counter the 9-inch tablet market with its 11-inch Chromebook.

Also, given that Chromebooks are low-cost hardware, the Make in India Also, the price will remain competitive. These devices will be manufactured at the Flex facility near Chennai – where HP has been producing laptops and desktops – from August 2, 2020.
