The first Test cricket match between India and New Zealand was played in Kanpur. However, the match was thrilling till the final ball in which Ejaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra firmly faced the deadly bowling of Indian spinners in the final overs and deprived Team India of victory. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin had brought India close to victory, but their performance did not help the team win. Shreyas Iyer, who scored a century in the first innings and a half-century in the second innings, was declared Player of the Match.

India set a target of 284 against New Zealand. New Zealand’s top order gave Team India a fight back but the New Zealand batsmen could not last long against the deadly bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin. With one wicket after another falling, India came close to victory but could not take the final wicket and the team had to be content with the draw. Against a target of 284, New Zealand scored 165 for 9.

In the second innings, Shreyas Iyer scored a half century.

New Zealand lost one wicket by the end of the fourth day against a target of 284 runs. The latter, however, gave a fight to Tom Latham, William Somerville and skipper Ken Williamson. Tom Latham also batted brilliantly in the second innings to score a half-century. He hit 52 off 146 balls with the help of three fours. While Summerville contributed 36 runs. Williamson was able to set up but could not play big innings. He was dismissed for 24 off 112 balls. While opener Will Young was out for two.

On the fifth day, the Indian spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja made a splash. Ashwin made both openers his victims. Jadeja then gave India significant success by assembling the pavilion with experienced dangerous batsmen like Williamson and Ross Taylor. Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee also struggled in the final overs but Jadeja dismissed them both to lead India to victory. But Ejaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra did not allow India to succeed. Jadeja was quick for four and Ashwin for three. While Akshar Patel and Umesh Yadav had one success each.

In the 90th over of New Zealand’s second innings, Ravindra Jadeja lbw out Tim Southee to give India their ninth victory. Then there were Ejaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra at the crease and India needed just one wicket in the next 8 overs. Seeing the bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin, India was on the verge of victory. However, Ejaz and Rachin resolutely faced the Indian bowlers and saved the team from defeat. Ejaz hit two unbeaten runs off 23 balls while Rachin faced 91 balls in which he scored an unbeaten 18 runs.
