Maradona’s birthday celebration in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Oct 31 (AP) Argentina has kicked off weekend celebrations to mark the birthday of late football superstar Diego Maradona.

Argentina won the Football World Cup title in 1978 and 1986 on the basis of Maradona’s brilliant game. In addition to former players of this team, members who have played with Maradona in age-group competitions took part in a match held in his memory in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Maradona’s first professional club (team), one of the world’s greatest footballers of all time, Argentinos Juniors, celebrated his birthday at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The fans did not need to buy any tickets for this match, it was kept free for them. The match was held at the same ground where Maradona made his debut on 20 October 1976.

10 points were printed on the jerseys of all the players participating in it. Maradona used to wear a 10-point jersey.

Had he been alive, he would have been celebrating his 61st birthday on Saturday.

Maradona died last year of heart failure during a ‘home stay’ on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Seven health professionals were charged with alleged medical negligence in this case. The investigation of this matter is ongoing.
