English bowler apologizes to Cheteshwar Pujara, find out the reason

Jack Brooks, the fast bowler of English county cricket club Somerset, on Thursday apologized to Cheteshwar Pujara, the star batsman of the Indian team. Pujara has apologized for his role in naming him ‘Steve’ while playing for Yorkshire.

Brooks, who joined Somerset in 2018, has also apologized for racial tweets made in 2012. England cricket is embroiled in controversy over Azim Rafique’s allegations of institutional racism against Yorkshire and its investigation. Brooks has been accused of using racist language against England fast bowler Timel Mills and Stuart Lodet, a short-time county cricket player for Oxfordshire. Somerset is investigating those allegations.

In a statement posted on Somerset Club’s website, Brooks said: “I want to say in reference to my name in Azim Rafique’s statement to MPs this week that the use of the name Steve is related to some people who have difficulty pronouncing it. This has been part of the dressing room in the past. It has nothing to do with any creed or lineage. It was common to give such a nickname.

“I accept the use of this name and now believe that it was insulting and inappropriate to do so,” he said. I contacted Cheteshwar Pujara and apologized for any insult to him and his family. At the time I didn’t see this as racial discrimination but now I admit that this was not acceptable.

Pujara played county cricket for Yorkshire in 2015 and 2018. Brooks also said that the language used in the two tweets he made in 2012 was inappropriate and unacceptable.
