Reece James scored on a penalty to give Chelsea a 4-3 win over Southampton. Earlier both the teams were tied at 1-1 till regular time. Chelsea’s goal was scored by Kai Havertz as Che Adams scored for Southampton at the start of the second half.
Chelsea had earlier made it to the fourth round after beating Aston Villa in a penalty shootout. He also defeated Villarreal in a penalty shootout in the UEFA Super Cup.
In another match between Premier League teams, Arsenal beat Leeds 2–0. Callum Chambers and AT Ketiah scored for the winning team.
Third Division team Sunderland advanced to the quarter-finals after beating Queens Park Rangers of Second Division 3–1 in a penalty shootout. By regular time both the teams had failed to score.
