3-storey under-construction building collapses in Mohali, one dead and several injured; Rescue operation continues

A three-storey commercial building under construction in Kharar town of Mohali in Punjab collapsed on Saturday evening. One person was killed while 10 others were injured after being buried under its debris. A senior police official said that the incident took place in Mohali’s Sector-126, where around 11 people were working when the building collapsed.

A police officer said that 9 people received minor injuries in the accident. They managed to avoid being hit by the debris. They were admitted to local hospitals. Two laborers were buried under the debris. The reason for the collapse of the building could not be ascertained.

Both the laborers were identified as Ajay Kumar of Uttar Pradesh and Nitish Kumar of Bihar. Both were admitted to Mohali Civil Hospital but doctors declared Ajay brought dead. Giving information about the incident, another official said that the roof of the third floor was being built at the time of the accident. First it fell heavily, due to which other floors also collapsed.

The police officer said that a case has been registered in this regard and investigation has been started. Two floors of the building had already been constructed. In a hurry to complete the work, the third floor of the building was being constructed, while the cement of the first two floors was still not able to set properly due to winter. The building is registered in the name of Leena Kalra, wife of Harpreet Singh Kalra, resident of Sector-70, Mohali.

On the other hand, Harpreet Singh Kalra termed the incident as unfortunate. He said that the contract was given to Dinesh Kumar of Bihar. The contractor should have followed all the safety protocols. SP Virk, on the other hand, said that the police would investigate the matter. After investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken against the culprits. Soon after the incident, fire department officials along with NDRF team and ambulances reached the spot and started the rescue operation.
