Strict policemen on violators of Kovid-19 rules in West Bengal

Kolkata, Oct 28 (PTI) Police are closely monitoring the movement of people in West Bengal’s Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and Hooghly, which have seen a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases after Durga Puja. The police have also arrested many people from different parts of the state for violating health norms.

At least 72 people in South 24 Parganas, 30 in Narendrapur and 42 in Sonarpur have been arrested for not wearing masks, a police official said.

The state government has earmarked 24 containment zones in Sonarpur and Narendrapur and closed markets and non-essential shops for three days to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The official said that 16 wards in Chandannagar of Hooghly district have been declared as micro-containment zones and public sit-ups have been conducted with people roaming the streets without wearing masks.

In Barasat in North 24 Parganas, some locals were detained for violating COVID norms.

The police in the city distributed masks and also warned people of dire consequences for violating the protocol, the official said.

Bengal currently has 129 containment zones out of which 43 are in South 24 Parganas district. Kovid-19 cases are increasing in West Bengal after Durga Puja.

After 976 new cases were reported in the state on Wednesday, the total number of infected people increased to 15,89,042.
