Called on the network for the first time in 1995
For the first time, on 27 September 1995, formal phone calls started on Airtel’s network. The first call took place between the then Minister of State PG Kurien and Communications Minister Sukh Ram. By the decade of 90, Sunil Bharti Mittal had tried his hands in many types of businesses. He was already ordering Push Pho from Taiwan named Beetle. He got the benefit of telephone experience in the next business. He started a company named Bharti Tele Ventures. In April 2006, its name was changed to Bharti Airtel Limited.
There are two partners in this company. Singapore’s Singtel and Airtel itself. Currently, the Mittal family holds 25.56 per cent stake in the company and Singtel holds 29.7 per cent.
always trying to do something different
Airtel has always been on top of usage. Some time ago, for the first time in the country, multiplexes were launched in Metaverse. After getting the green signal from the Reserve Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank has launched the payments service with 20 percent participation. Along with doing something new, Airtel was also in controversies. After the auction of 5-G spectrum, it was revealed that AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) of Rs 1.47 lakh crore was outstanding on many telecom companies of the country including Airtel. However, Airtel paid the installment of 4 years in advance last year. For some time, there was talk of Google investing in Airtel, although nothing was officially said about it.
When Punjab’s connection came in handy
When the licensing process started, Airtel got the Mumbai circle. Tata challenged Airtel regarding this. As a result, the decision was overturned and Airtel got the license for Delhi. This decision proved to be a profitable deal for Airtel. Sunit Mittal said in his interview, he belongs to Punjab, so he understood Delhi better.
Airtel’s customer base was post paid in the initial 4 years. By the end of the 90s, customers of pre-paid service started adding up. The company named the prepaid service as Magic. After this Sunil Mittal’s brother Rajan Bharti Mittal started the SMS service. This service has come in trend. After this the company never looked back.
Currently, Airtel is on the second position in terms of number of customers. Airtel is providing services in 18 countries of the world.
