Former RAW chief AS Dulat seen holding Rahul’s hand, had accused Vajpayee government in Kandahar hijack

AS Dulat was born in 1940 in a Jat family of Punjab. In 1965, he passed the Civil Services Examination and selected IPS. He got Rajasthan cadre. After working here for four years, he came on central deputation and joined the Intelligence Bureau. AS Dulat was educated from the Bishop School of Shimla. He completed his graduation from Punjab University Chandigarh.

Dulat has been the Joint Director of the Intelligence Bureau in Kashmir, where he was posted from 1988 to 1990. This was the time when the valley was most turbulent. He was then promoted to the post of Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau and in 1999 became the Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing. He remained in this position till his retirement in December 2000. After this the government appointed him in the PMO. He stayed here till 2004 and kept looking after Kashmir affairs.

Vajpayee government was accused

In 2015, Dulat wrote the book ‘Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years’, in which he accused the Vajpayee government of negligence in the Kandahar plane hijack case. Dulat had claimed that when IC 814 was in India, till that time no strategy could be made to save the aircraft. Dulat has also been the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau during the Kargil War. He has co-authored a book on spies with Asad Durrani, former chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. Its title is ‘The Story of Spies: RAW, ISAI and the Illusion of Peace’.
