Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar challenges Sabarmati Ashram scheme in court

Ahmedabad, Oct 27 (PTI) Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has filed a PIL in the Gujarat High Court challenging the state government’s redevelopment project at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The petition, filed recently, is likely to be heard after the Diwali vacation.

The government has proposed the redevelopment of the Sabarmati Ashram, which is closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and India’s freedom struggle. The government proposes to develop the ashram into a world-class tourist hub by bringing together 48 existing heritage properties located nearby.

Tushar Gandhi on Wednesday said he has challenged the government’s Rs 1,200-crore Gandhi Ashram memorial and campus development project in a public interest litigation as it is against the will and philosophy of the Father of the Nation.

He said that in the PIL, the Gujarat government has been made the respondent along with all the six trusts that look after the various activities of the Sabarmati Ashram. Along with this, Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and others associated with the project have also been made respondents.

Writer and social activist Tushar Gandhi said, “We have raised the question before these trusts that why are they not fulfilling their responsibility?” It has been said that Bapu’s ashrams and memorials should be kept away from government and political influence.
