MBBS: 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population, will MBBS seats increase with this scheme of NMC?

MBBS NMC: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to limit 100 NEET UG seats per state with a population of 10 lakh. On this decision, NMC claims that increasing MBBS seats to 100 in an area with a population of 10 lakh will reduce regional disparities regarding healthcare professions. The National Medical Commission has prepared a new draft for new medical colleges. Where there is a population of 10 lakh, new colleges will be recognized. The mandatory distance between two colleges is 15 kilometers.

NMC has also issued an official notification along with it, in which it has been said that this decision will also help in the long run in providing effective quality education to the medical students. Let us tell you that in the MSR Guidelines 2023, a provision of 100 seats for MBBS per one million population has been included in every state. In which it is said that its aim is to provide the right teaching environment to medical students and improve their overall quality of education.

NMC said that with this increase, if the decision to give seats in medical colleges is given then there will be a possibility of increasing about 40,000 MBBS seats in the country. The NMC notice also said that this decision of NMC is being appreciated by various state branches of IMA, students unions and the medical community in general and NMC will continue its efforts to continuously improve the medical teaching facility in the country.

Before this, let us tell you that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn the decision to reduce the passing marks in MBBS subjects with two papers to 40 percent. The Commission has said that amendment in the Curriculum Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines is not possible. NMC had issued the notification of amendment in CBME guidelines in the month of September.
