PIA Update: Pakistan International Airlines on the verge of closure due to lack of money, 537 flights canceled in 11 days

Pakistan International Airlines Crisis: Pakistan’s aviation company Pakistan International Airlines, which is facing economic crisis, is on the verge of closure. In the last 11 days, airlines have canceled more than 500 flights. Pakistan State Oil has cut off the supply of aviation fuel to Pakistan International Airlines due to non-payment of ATF dues. Due to this decision of PSO, Pakistan International Airlines has had to cancel a total of 537 flights since October 13, 2023. 

According to Pakistan news channel ARY News, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing the biggest crisis. On Thursday, 49 domestic and international flights taking off from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Multan and Peshawar had to be cancelled. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) reduced the supply of air fuel to Pakistan International Airlines due to which these flights had to be cancelled. Among these flights, Karachi to Islamabad and Karachi to Tourbat flights were also cancelled. Amidst this crisis, PAI has paid US$ 789000 to PSO for two days of air fuel. 

According to the report of ARY News, PIA CEO Aamir Hayat has written a letter to encourage the employees amid the financial crisis. Amid the financial crisis, efforts are also underway to privatize Pakistan International Airlines. 

PIA spokesperson said that the airline has paid Pakistan State Oil (PSO) Rs 500 million and payments for air fuel are being made on a daily basis. Currently, Pakistan International Airlines is purchasing air fuel for flights on other profitable routes including Saudi Arabia, Canada, China.
