The Telangana High Court on Monday morning delivered a landmark judgment in the case of a woman named Mariamma, who caused a stir in Telangana a few months back, who died in jail (lockup death). The High Court has refused to hand over the Mariamma case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The High Court has directed the Telangana government to set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the matter. The court ordered the trial to continue on the basis of the report already given. However, the Advocate said that if the case was handed over to the CBI, the public’s trust in the police would be eroded. General BS Prasad told the court. He asked to see the investigation conducted by the investigating agencies in the state. The court issued the latest verdict. It caused a statewide sensation. She was arrested and jailed by the police in a theft case. It was during this sequence that she died. In the name of investigation, the police arrested Mariamma at the station.
