Court acquits Akbaruddin Owaisi in ‘hate speech’ case

Hyderabad, Nov 17 (PTI) A special court in Hyderabad has acquitted All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi in a 2004 case of “hate speech”.

The Special Sessions Court for hearing against MPs or MLAs on Tuesday found Owaisi not guilty of the charges leveled against him and acquitted him.

A case was registered against Owaisi under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on the complaint of a police officer. The official had alleged that the Chandrayangutta MLA had made an inflammatory speech at a public meeting here in March 2004 during election campaign and tried to incite the public.

The chargesheet was filed by the police after getting approval from the government to prosecute Owaisi.

After hearing arguments and counter arguments, the court acquitted Owaisi for want of evidence as no independent witness supported the case.
