MBBS seats in the country increased by 110%, NEET PG seats also increased by 117%

The number of medical colleges in the country has increased by 82 per cent since 2014. While the number of medical colleges was 387 in 2014, it has now increased to 704. MBBS seats have also increased by 110 percent. MBBS seats were 51,348 in 2014, which have now increased to 1,07,948. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. He said that the number of medical PG seats in the country has also increased by 117 percent. Which was 31,185 before 2014, till now it has become 67,802.

Union Health Minister Mandaviya said that 101 medical colleges have been approved in the last five years under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). It aims to establish new medical colleges by linking them with existing district/referral hospitals.

A total of 157 government medical colleges have been approved in three phases under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) scheme, of which five are in Assam. The CSS was implemented with the objective of strengthening and upgrading existing state government or centrally run medical colleges to increase the number of MBBS (both UG and PG) seats. 4,677 MBBS seats in 77 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 5,612.25 crore, 4,058 PG seats in 72 colleges in Phase I with an approved cost of Rs 1,498.43 crore and 3,957 PG seats in 62 colleges in Phase II with an approved cost of Rs 4,461.44 crore approved Assistance with costs is provided.
