When she was just 9 years old, she was married to 13 year old Jyotirao Phule. Savitribai took teacher training in Ahmednagar and Pune and became a teacher. Savitribai Phule, along with her husband, opened a girls' school in Pune in 1848. To alleviate the sufferings of widows, he led a strike against barbers for not shaving the heads of widows, which was a custom of the time.
