Number of Indians appearing for TOEFL to study abroad increased

The percentage of Indians appearing for the ‘Test of English as a Foreign Language’ (TOEFL) examination for pursuing secondary education abroad and for certification has increased gradually over the years, while the percentage of Indians appearing for the examination for immigration purposes has The number of people sitting has decreased. This information has been obtained from the data of Education Testing Service (ETS). ETS, based in Preston, New Jersey state in the US, said this trend reflects the changing aspirations of the youth. ETS conducts the TOEFL and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).

According to the data, the percentage of Indian candidates seeking certification or studying in secondary schools abroad has increased from 5.83 percent of total candidates in 2021 to 7.77 percent in 2022. During the same period, the percentage of Indian candidates taking TOEFL for employment or immigration declined from 8.19 percent to 7.22 percent.

Top ETS officials have confirmed that this trend has been observed since 2018.

According to the data, the percentage of Indians appearing for TOEFL to enroll in undergraduate or postgraduate business courses/undergraduate or postgraduate programs other than professional programs has increased from 70.84 per cent in 2021 to 71.87 per cent in 2022.

Sachin Jain, country manager for India and South Asia at ETS, said, “The data we have shows us that there is a growing trend among students to take the TOEFL exam for secondary education. This trend is proof of the changing aspirations of the youth.”

The number of Indians taking the TOEFL exam increased by 53 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. In 2022, the number of candidates saw a 59 percent increase compared to 2021.

In India, the highest number of people appear for the exam from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
