Who was CV Raman?
CV Raman's full name was Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman. He was born on 7 November 1888 in Tiruchilapalli, Tamil Nadu. His father was a lecturer in mathematics and physics. He studied at St. Aloysius Anglo-Indian High School in Visakhapatnam and Presidency College, then Madras. He completed his M.Sc. from Presidency College in 1907. He received a gold medal in Physics at the University of Madras. Between 1907 and 1933 he worked at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata. During this period, he did extensive research on many topics related to physics. After retirement, he established the Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru. 1947 He became the Director of the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc). In 1954, the Government of India awarded him the highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna. He was the first scientist not only from India but also from Asia to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. He died on November 21, 1970.
