Today is the birth anniversary of India’s great social reformer, thinker, social worker and revolutionary activist Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. He was born on 11 April 1827 in Pune, Maharashtra. Jyotiba Phule remained engaged in the service of the Indian society throughout his life. He dedicated his entire life for the empowerment of the deprived, exploited and women. I pay tribute to such a man of the era on his birth anniversary.
When Jyotiba Phule was only one year old, his mother passed away. The studies were left in the middle. Then later, at the age of 21, completed the seventh grade of English.
Friends, In the Indian society of the 19th century, many evils including casteism, child marriage were prevalent. The condition of women and Dalits was very bad. Mahatma Phule raised his voice against these evils of the Indian society. He was an opponent of child marriage and a supporter of widow remarriage. He along with his wife Savitribai Phule fought for women’s right to education. He and his wife Savitribai Phule were pioneers of women’s education in India.
Phule wanted to save women from gender discrimination. For this it was very necessary to educate women. Seeing his wife’s interest in studies, he made up his mind to teach her and encouraged her. Savitribai took teacher’s training in Ahmednagar and Pune. He opened the country’s first women’s school for girls in Pune in the year 1848. His wife Savitribai became the first teacher in this school. The credit goes to Savitri Bai Phule for being the first teacher of India. The Phule couple had opened a total of 18 schools in the country. The British East India Company also honored his contribution. He also had to face opposition from the society for promoting women’s education.
Jyotirao Phule had established the Satyashodhak Samaj to provide justice to the downtrodden and downtrodden. Due to these tireless efforts for social reform, in 1888 he was given the title of Mahatma in a huge meeting in Mumbai. He died in 1890 at the age of 63.
