The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday declared 20 universities as fake. In such a situation, they do not have the right to confer any degree. Delhi has the maximum number of eight such institutes. The move by the UGC is aimed at saving students from falling into the trap of getting education from unrecognized and fraudulent institutions. It is important for students and their parents to verify the affiliation of the universities before enrolling.
UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said that it has come to the notice of the commission that many institutions are awarding degrees contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. The degree awarded by such universities shall neither be recognized nor valid for the purpose of higher education or employment. He said that these are not universities and they have the right to confer any degree.
Releasing a list of these fake universities, he said that there are eight such institutions in Delhi, four in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Apart from this, one university each from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Puducherry has been included in this.
