Beating Retreat 2023: Tomorrow the Beating Retreat program will be organized at Vijay Chowk in Delhi. This time the Beating Retreat program is going to be very special. This year will also see the biggest ever drone display in India. The drone show will see 3,500 indigenous drones lighting up the sky over Raisina Hill. ‘Beating the Retreat’ actually marks the end of India’s Republic Day celebrations. In this event, the bands of the Army, Air Force and Navy march to traditional tunes. Every year after Republic Day, on the evening of 29 January, ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony is organized.

It is performed in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Road. The four-day long Republic Day celebrations end with the Beating Retreat. Like the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January, this program is also worth watching. For this, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Vijay Chowk, North Block, South Block are decorated with very beautiful lights.

Why and what is beating retreat?

‘Beating the Retreat Ceremony’ marks the return of the army to the barracks. There has been a tradition of beating retreat around the world. During the battle, the armies went back to their camp after setting down their weapons, then there was a musical ceremony, it is called beating retreat. Beating retreats in India started in the 1950s. Then Major Robert of the Indian Army completed this ceremony with the display of the bands of the armies. The President attends the ceremony as the Chief Guest.

National Salute is given to the President as soon as he arrives at Vijay Chowk. During this, the national anthem Jana Gana Mana is sung. The tricolor is hoisted. The bands of the Army, Air Force and Navy march together to the traditional tune.

The bugle of the retreat is followed by the band playing. During this, the band master approaches the President and seeks permission to take the band back. This marks the completion of the 26 January celebrations and the bands march back to play the popular tune “Saare Jahan Se Achha”.
