US lawmakers visit Taiwan, plan to meet senior leaders

Taipei: Five US lawmakers suddenly arrived in Taiwan on Thursday night, where they will meet senior leaders. This information was given by the US Embassy in Taiwan ‘American Institute in Taiwan’. The American Institute in Taiwan reported that members of the US House of Representatives, who arrived in Taiwan on a one-day visit, would be met by senior leaders of the island. Details about the trip have not been provided.

US lawmakers are here on a visit at a time when tensions between Taiwan and China have escalated. Taiwan has been self-governing since the two sides parted ways in a civil war in 1949, but China maintains that the island is under its jurisdiction. “Just arrived on the soil of the Republic of Taiwan,” South Carolina Republican lawmaker Nancy Mays tweeted Thursday night.

Mark Takano, Alyssa Slotkin, Colin Allred, Sarah Jacobs and Mace are among the delegations to Taiwan. A few weeks earlier, a group of six Republican lawmakers had arrived on the island. US lawmakers have visited Taiwan for the third time this year.

Earlier in June, three US lawmakers came to Taiwan to donate the Kovid-19 vaccine. US President Joe Biden’s administration has also invited Taiwan to next month’s “Summit for Democracy” to discuss democracy, a move that China has strongly condemned.
