United Nations: India has once again been elected a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO for the year 2021-25. The members of the executive board were elected on Wednesday. India’s Permanent Delegation to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) tweeted, “India received 164 votes in favor of being elected a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO for the year 2021-25.”
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday expressed appreciation for the selection and tweeted his appreciation for the “good work” by the Ministry of External Affairs and India’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO. He tweeted, “India’s Permanent Delegation to the Ministry of External Affairs and UNESCO, you have done a wonderful job.”
Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi thanked the countries for supporting India’s candidature. He tweeted, “Happy to announce that India has made it to the Executive Board of UNESCO. Hearty congratulations and thanks to all Member States who supported our candidacy.
Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, the Cook Islands and China have also been elected members of the Executive Board from the ‘Group Four Asia and Pacific Countries’. The Executive Board of UNESCO is one of the three constitutional organs of the United Nations agency. It is elected by the General Conference. Working under the General Conference, this Executive Board oversees the organization’s programs and related budget estimates submitted by the Director-General. According to UNESCO’s website, the Executive Board consists of 58 member states, whose term is of four years. UNESCO includes a total of 193 member countries.
