US Eric Garcetti: Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday (March 8) moved ahead in the race to become the US Ambassador to India. Despite US efforts, the post of US ambassador to India has been lying vacant for more than two years.
Actually, Eric Garcetti was nominated two years ago i.e. in the year 2021 itself by US President Joe Biden. At that time he was holding the post of Mayor in Los Angeles, the second largest city of America. The mayor’s nomination was stalled by criticism of his handling of sexual assault allegations against an aide.
Need consent from the Senate
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee includes two Republican Democrats, so that their nomination can be sent to the Senate. He is likely to have the vote to confirm the ambassadorship in the Senate, but individual senators may still pose difficulties. However, unlike most countries, ambassadors in the US require approval by the Senate, which often takes a long time to appoint an ambassador. However, Garcetti’s nomination has been delayed for an unusually long time compared to the others.
State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters after the committee’s vote that simply put, America definitely needs an ambassador to India. There is no country in the world which is in a position to keep itself vacant for more than two years in a strategically important and valuable place like India.
Interest in India
Once Garcetti also talked about his interest in India. He had said that he had come on a visit to India as a university student. During that time he was inspired to study Hindi and Urdu. At the same time, Garcetti was barred from seeking a third term as mayor. He was once seen as a rising star in Democratic Party politics and even ran for the presidency.
One of the Republicans who voted for Garcetti is Bill Hegerty, who has been an ambassador to Japan. He agreed that having a full-ranking ambassador is important for New Delhi.
