ENG vs SL: Same points, same win, so England ticket to semi-finals and Australia out of the tournament?

T20 World Cup 2022: The 39th match of T20 World Cup 2022 between England vs Sri Lanka has been played in Sydney. In this match, England won by four wickets against Sri Lanka. With this victory, England entered the semi-finals. So, with Sri Lanka’s defeat, Australia’s remaining hopes were also dashed. Importantly, despite having equal points and winning the same matches, why is England’s ticket to the semi-finals and Australia’s out of the competition? Let us know the equation behind this.

New Zealand, England, Australia, Ireland and Afghanistan were included in Group ‘A’ of the T20 World Cup.  The New Zealand team was the first to get the semi-final ticket from this group. Meanwhile, Afghanistan, Ireland and Sri Lanka have already been eliminated from the tournament. There was a tug-of-war between England and Australia for second place. Australia and England have the same number of points. Both teams have won three out of five matches. So, one match of both the teams has been cancelled. Due to which their number of marks is seven each. But, Australia’s (-0.173) run rate is worse than England’s (+0.473). Due to this, whether Australia will get the semi-final ticket or not, it depends on Sri Lanka’s performance. If Sri Lanka had won today’s match, England would have been left with five points and Australia would have cleared their way to the semi-finals. But England has ended the challenge of Australia by defeating Sri Lanka.

What is the status of ‘B’ group in Super 12 round?
The last three matches of Group B of Super 12 round are going to be played tomorrow. Netherlands vs South Africa, Pakistan vs Bangladesh and the final match between India and Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, the confusion in ‘B’ group still persists. However, it looks like India and South Africa will enter the semi-finals from the second group. India currently have six points. By winning their last match, they can retain the top position with eight points. While South Africa have five points from four matches. South Africa will have seven points if they win tomorrow’s match against the Netherlands. ICC has not kept any reserve day for matches in Super 12 round of this tournament. That is why if it rains on the day of the match between India and Zimbabwe, both the teams will be awarded one point each. That means India will have seven points and India will qualify for the semi-finals.
