70 migrants rescued from ferry sinking near Greek island

Athens, Nov 22 (AP) Greece’s Coast Guard said they rescued more than 70 migrants from a boat sinking in the waters southwest of the island of Crete, although one migrant was killed in the process.

A Coast Guard spokesman told the Associated Press news agency that 70 migrants rescued on Sunday afternoon identified themselves as Syrians. The matter is under investigation.

According to media reports, two people on the boat have been arrested on suspicion of being smugglers. However, the spokesperson did not confirm this.

The spokesman said one person may have drowned.

Reports in the local media said that women and children were also among the rescued migrants.
