The entire racket was exposed after a complaint of mass conversion of 100 people from 37 families of Kankaria village in Bharuch. Amod police registered a case and arrested four accused named Abdul Aziz Patel alias Ajit Chhaganbhai Vasava, Yusuf Jivanbhai Patel alias Mahendra Jivanbhai Vasava, Ayub Barkatbhai Patel alias Raman Barkatbhai Vasava and Ibrahim Punabhai Patel alias Jitu Punabhai Vasava. All the accused are residents of Kankaria village. The local court granted the accused five days police custody for questioning.
According to police, the four accused are small fries of the racket while the big fish are smokescreens. Police are now trying to identify other suspects who may have helped them directly or indirectly, an official said. All four accused have also been converted and it is learned that they are not cooperating with the investigators.
According to police, the four accused had forged Aadhaar cards and other legal documents of the converted villagers in Surat. However, they did not disclose the exact location of the forged documents. A team will visit Surat in the coming days for further investigation.
