In 2000, Krishna was awarded the NTR National Award, and in 2008, Andhra University gave him an honorary doctorate. In 2009, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan award. Australian government has released a postal stamp with Krishna’s name. Apart from being an actor, director and producer, Krishna also served as a politician. In 1972, Krishna declared his open support for the Jai Andhra movement. In 1984, he joined the Congress Party at the invitation of Rajiv Gandhi. In 1989, he contested as an MP from Eluru on behalf of the Congress and won. With the death of Rajiv Gandhi, Krishna moved away from direct politics. There were differences between NTR and Krishna when they were in politics.
In 1962, Krishna got married to his uncle’s daughter, Indira Devi. This couple has two sons named Mahesh Babu and Ramesh Babu and three daughters named Padmavati, Manjula and Priyadarshani. Four years after his marriage to Indira, Krishna got married for the second time to Vijayanirma in 1969. He acted in about 48 films with Vijayanirma. The friendship that developed between them at that time led to marriage. Krishna acted in many films under the direction of Vijayanirmala. Krishna acted in plays before entering films. He gained recognition with the 1960 play Papam Kalikellina. After that, Krishna entered the movies. He also did multi-starrer movies with NTR, ANNR, Shobhan Babu and Krishnam Raju.
Krishna revealed in several interviews that he was a fan of NTR during his college days and loved his movie Pathalbhairavi. Krishna is the first hero to enter the Hindi film industry from Tollywood. Krishna acted with more than 80 heroines. He did 48 films with Vijayanirmal, 47 with Jayaprada, 31 with Sridevi and 23 with Radha. He has produced more than 50 films in various languages as a producer. Krishna created a record by acting in double role in 25 movies and triple role in 7 movies.
