Balloon Dilation Surgery In Delhi AIIMS: The team of doctors of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has created history by performing such a miracle that once again ‘doctors’ on earth. Doctors at Delhi AIIMS have successfully performed heart surgery on a 28-week-old fetus in a woman’s womb with the help of a needle and that too within just 90 seconds.
Actually a woman, who had miscarried for the first time and the second child was able to live only for 20 days after birth. In such a situation, when she became pregnant for the third time, she did not want to take any risk this time, so she was getting regular check-ups and ultrasound done during pregnancy. Meanwhile, he came to know that there is a blockage in the heart of the fetus growing in the womb and because of this its heart is not developing. After this the child’s chances of survival were slim.
There was a blockage in the heart of the fetus
The woman reached AIIMS in the hope of saving the fetus growing in the womb and for its proper development. Here, on examination of the fetus, the doctors found a blockage in its heart the size of a grape. Surgery was needed to remove it and that too immediately, because otherwise the heart could not develop. In such a situation, the woman gave consent for this surgery and then the doctors of Cardiology, Cardiac Anesthesia and Fetal Medicine of the Department of Gynecology at the Cardiac Center of AIIMS together created history by successfully operating the fetal heart of a pregnant woman.
< p style ="text-align: justify;">Surgery in 90 seconds was a big challenge
To execute this 90-second surgery, a team of 25 doctors did several mock drills. After many hours of planning, they were able to execute it successfully. This surgery was quite challenging, because with the help of ultrasound, this whole surgery had to remove the blockage of the heart inside the woman’s womb, the size of a grape, that too when it was continuously moving and it had to be done within 90 seconds. Had to be done inside. If this was not the case, it could be dangerous for the fetus.
Successful surgery performed with balloon dilation procedure
The team of doctors at AIIMS accepted this challenge and a needle was inserted into the heart of the fetus and the blockage of the heart valves was removed with a balloon catheter. This whole process is called balloon dilation. After this surgery, the flow of blood to the heart of the fetus was restored. Doctors hope the procedure will improve fetal heart development and reduce the risk of serious heart problems after birth. At present, both the fetus and the mother are stable and are being closely monitored.
