The BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come up with a plan to join the army of Agnipath. Under this scheme, 4 years training will be given to the youth joining the army. After 4 years of training, only 25 percent of young people will be hired on a permanent basis. 75 percent of young people will be laid off.
Young people will be paid for 4 years. But it is said that the future of other young people could be affected as only 25 percent of young people are made permanent. Thus the youth have protested against this project. Moreover, opposition parties, including the Congress and the DMK, have urged the central government to drop the project.
In this context, senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has commented on the Agnipath project. According to a post he posted on the social networking site Twitter:
The ‘Agnipath’ project is a political decision. Today it has become a controversial political issue. It is not appropriate for the state governor to comment in favor of the state. Moreover, it is not fair to say that domestic and foreign forces are misleading the youth. This problem must be solved through peaceful struggle and extensive discussion. There is no place for a state governor to participate in this debate.
Thus it is mentioned.
It is noteworthy that P. Chidambaram made this statement while Governor of Tamil Nadu RN Ravi had expressed his support for the Agnipath project.
