According to a press release issued by the Commissioner of Transport:
There are complaints that non-government vehicles are being used illegally all over Tamil Nadu with the letters G or A written on the number plate or affixed with a sticker.
According to Section 3 (K) of the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Act, a government vehicle is a Government of Tamil Nadu vehicle only. Government vehicles are tax deductible and salvage certified. Therefore the letters G or A should be used only on the vehicles of the Government of Tamil Nadu which are eligible for the relevant tax exemption and salvage certificate.
Therefore, it is hereby informed that action will be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act against those who use the letters G or A in the vehicles of State Owned Companies, Boards and Public Sector Undertakings other than Tamil Nadu Government Vehicles.
Thus it is stated.
