Sachin writes that when Mirabai Chanu successfully lifted 109 kg in weightlifting in the Commonwealth Games, there was a thunderous applause in the entire hall. Meanwhile, Chanu with only her usual smile and polite ‘Namaste’ backed away slowly. Everyone was surprised by the way Chanu not only won India’s first gold medal, but also recorded a new record in his name. Chanu won this gold in weightlifting after Sanket Sargar’s silver and P Gururaja’s bronze opened the medal account for India at the Commonwealth Games.
India won 22 Gold, 16 Silver and 23 Bronze medals in this multi-event which lasted for 11 days and finished fourth in the points table with 61 medals. India’s performance in the Commonwealth Games 2022 was better than the expectations even without a shooting event. There can be no better time to celebrate the Independence Day. This year the country is celebrating 75th Independence Day as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
On the achievement of women in the Commonwealth Games, Sachin said, “All athletes for India have crafted a story for themselves with perseverance and agility in the face of adversity. Women faced more challenge in crafting these stories, who not only won medals for the country but also broke society, family and other external shackles. This includes Sushila Devi Likmabam, Tulika Mann, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Neetu Ghangas, Nikhat Zareen, PV Sindhu along with women’s hockey team.
Apart from the traditional games in Birmingham, women athletes from India created history by winning medals in sports that very few people knew about. Especially lawn balls where our women’s four team got India’s first gold in this game.
